More and more lately, I am hearing hearing and reading advice on how to be a ‘cool’ parent at work.
You know, the kind of parent who has kids but doesn’t really ‘go on’ about having kids.
The kind of parent who can go for weeks without once mentioning something cool that his or her kids did at the office.
The kind of parent who totally understands that his or her colleagues who don’t have kids would totally hate to hear them even saying their kid’s names out loud.
The kind of parent who wouldn’t dream of having photos of their kids on the office desk.
Well, I say – Fuck That.
Here are 10 Good Reasons Why You Should Absolutely Talk About Your Kids At The Office:
1. It’s Your Life
Yes, your work life is very important, as are any interests you might have in current affairs, sports, fashion or popular culture – but so are your kids, right? Why should you have to keep this monumental part of your life under wraps?
2. It Humanises You
Often, we can get so wrapped up in our workflow that we forget to be personal with the people who work alongside us every day. Why not mention something funny that happened with the kids at the weekend so give them an insight into what your outside-work life really looks like?
3. It’s Not An Issue For YOU
If someone really has an issue with you talking about your kids, surely that is not the type of person you are interested in impressing anyway, is it? If they seem disinterested, then just don’t bother next time. But don’t change, girl – NEVER change.
4. Everyone Is Annoying
At some point or another, everyone of us is either a bit irritable OR a bit irritating. You might not be that interested in hearing about John From Account’s new girlfriend, but you’ll see that chat through because you have manners, right? So make sure he hears all about Sonny’s upcoming birthday party plans when he’s done going on about WhatsHerFace.
5. Kids Are Amazing
Not everybody feels this way all the time but eventually, most people WILL get on board with believing that kids are really important. Maybe that won’t happen until they have kids themselves but in the meantime, if you’re already a parent – do your kids a favour and be proud to talk about them wherever you go.
