Science reveals how your partner’s personality has a BIG impact on your success at work

“Marry in haste and repent at your leisure”  – My mother’s words throughout my early twenties.

Turns out, and I say this through gritted teeth, she could actually be right.

Choosing a spouse with the right personality may be the key to your future career success.

A study has found that the more consciousness your partner is – the further you will rise on the work ladder.

The reasons?

Well, a more conscientious person is likely to support a spouse’s career in three important ways: helping with day to day tasks like child care, pitching in with the grocery shop and doing their fair share around the house. This is a huge support and helps the partner focus on their career. They also help influence your habits and can contribute to making you more reliable which can boost your career success. Your amazing spouse can also promote a healthier work-life balance and reduce your stress levels helping you to perform better in work.

The study showed that a conscientious spouse is equally important for both male and female working spouses – and promoted career success whether or not both spouses worked.

The Huffington Post reports that the five-year study examined 5,000 married people who ranged in age from 19 to 89. Researchers gave participants a series of psychological tests to assess participant’s scores in five broad areas of personality — openness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, and conscientiousness.

So if you take anything from this study -it’s to perhaps have a little more awareness how our own personalities affect our partners.

Just in time for Valentine’s day! Aw shucks.
