4 beauty myths EVERYONE fears (debunked)

HerFamily

Remember those beauty and fashion rules your Granny swore by, that ‘red and green should never been seen’ and all that c*ck? You thought that if the wind changed so would your face too, eh? I have news, it won’t.

This is the truth about the cosmetics and colours we know and (are sometimes afraid to) love according to our mates over on Maven46:

Old wives tale

Not cool? Blue eyes can’t wear blue eye shadow.

Truth: Certain shades of blue can look really beautiful on blue eyes and my favourite is navy – Science says so. Studies have shown that other humans find the most visually appealing eyes are ones where the outside of the iris is much darker than the inside (think wolf eyes like rideface Michael Fassbender).

Salvation: A rich, deep shade such as NARS Dual Intensity “Giove”, €40, will accentuate the outer part of the iris to give the optical illusion that inner part is lighter. Cool.

Balderdash

Not cool? Red heads can’t wear red lipstick.

Truth: Eh, one name: Jessica Chastain. The trick is to gauge the tone of your lip colour – you have either warm or cool toned lips lady. Get it wrong and it can all clash horribly with naturally red hair, but find a complimentary shade and it will stand out for all the right reasons. Team your striking lip colour with oodles of personality and you are winning.

Salvation: For warm tones I really like Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream lipstick in ‘Cosmopolitan’, €28, and for cooler tones Burberry Lip Velvet in ‘Military Red’, €30, is beaut.

Not cool? Lip balms make your lips drier in the long run.

Truth: OK, so there might be a teeny bit of truth to this, but it usually boils down to the ingredients used in certain lip balms. Camphor, menthol and alcohol are irritants for lips and will dry them out. It might help out your skin if you avoid these – I’m not a Dermatologist, though.

Salvation: One of my favourites is the Dr Lipp Original Nipple Balm for lips, €15, which contains no parabens, synthetic fragrance or colouring.

Hogwash

Not cool? Don’t wear moisturiser if your skin is oily.

Truth: Changing weather, hormones, stress – these things that can affect our complexion. It’s so easy to get confused when it comes to what our skin needs. The idea that oily or problematic skin doesn’t get dehydrated is pretty common. The truth is any skin type, be it dry, combination or oily can become dehydrated when there is a lack of moisture in the top layers. Naturally, our skin can’t produce water for itself so it compensates by producing oil, which in turn can lead to congestion and break outs. What a pain.

Salvation:  To combat this, try using a hydrating mask such as Sisley Express Flower Gel, €125 twice a week and do this.
