Was the controversial birthday decision unfair or understandable?
An Australian radio presenter has sparked backlash after admitting she didn’t tell her daughter it was her birthday until the afternoon of her special day.
Mum and podcast host Laura Byrne spoke out about the controversial decision on air.
She told her KIIS FM The Pick Up co-hosts about the unusual decision.
Laura Byrne explained that her daughter is only four years old so she didn’t think she would mind.
The mum wanted to tell her daughter it was her birthday after daycare was finished.
She explained her decision: “Yesterday it was my daughter’s birthday, she’s four, and we didn’t tell her it was her birthday until we picked her up from daycare.”
They didn’t tell her “because we didn’t want her to get upset in the morning that we had to go to work.
The mum confirmed: “So she only found out it was her birthday at 4 pm.”
Her co-hosts Mitch Churi and Brittany Hockley said she ‘gaslit’ her daughter into not knowing it was her birthday.
They said: “Wait, you gaslit your kid into not knowing it was her own birthday?”
“Aren’t they supposed to go to daycare and celebrate with their friends?” they asked.
The mum said they still celebrated her special day but just at a later time.
“She came home. It was Monday afternoon and we said ‘baby it’s your birthday today, happy birthday!’ And then we had a party for her,” she confirmed.
Do you think she was in the wrong?
