Residents of the city of Omaha, Nebraska are in shock today after a teenage mother allegedly killed her newborn baby by throwing it out the window.
According to reports, the 16-year-old girl had gone into labour while she was sleeping and had given birth in her bedroom, alone, at approximately 4am on Friday morning.
The high school student told police that, after appealing for help on Facebook, she panicked and threw the tiny infant out the window of the second floor Kellom Knolls apartment before telling her mother she had given birth.
The girl’s mother rushed downstairs and performed CPR on the infant on the grass outside the building until emergency services arrives. Tragically, the child passed away before they reached the hospital.
According to the Omaha World-Herald, the teenager, Antonia Lopez, will be charged as an adult with felony child abuse resulting in death. She is currently at Douglas County Youth Center, a juvenile detention facility. The charges are expected to be filed next week.
“The child wasn’t a stillborn,” Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine told the newspaper. “To be booked on that count, the child would have had to have been born alive.”
Lopez’s family members have expressed their shock at the tragedy, claiming they had no idea the teenager was pregnant.
