The Oscar nominations are in and quite a few Irish names feature.
Our very own Saoirse Ronan is in with a chance for Best Actress in a Leading Role due to her performance in Brooklyn but she’s up against strong competition in the form of Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years).
Brooklyn and Room are both in for Best Picture, as are The Big Short, Bridge of Spies, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant and Spotlight. The two also feature in the Best Adatped Screenplay category.

Lenny Abrahamson could also take home the prize for Best Director for Room having been nominated alongside Adam McKay (The Big Short), George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road), Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant) and Tom McCarthy (Spotlight).
Michael Fassbender is representing the nation as well in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category for his role in Steve Jobs but again it’s a tough group including Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Matt Damon (The Martian), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl).
The ladies in line for the Best Supporting Actress Role are Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rooney Mara (Carol), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs).

Meanwhile, for the men, Christian Bale (The Big Short), Tom Hardy (The Revenant), Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) and Sylvester Stallone (Creed) will battle it out for the Best Supporting Actor title.
Best Animated Feature Film will be picked from the following: Anomalisa, Inside Out, Shaun the Sheep, Boy and the Wild and When Marnie Was There.
