Britain To Add 5 Hours To The School Week

Katie Mythen-Lynch

Thousands of children in Britain will see their school day extended by one hour as part of radical new plans to make life easier for parents.

Unveiling his budget today, Chancellor George Osborne said the shake up of the education system will end the ‘Victorian tradition’ of the 3.30pm finish in the United Kingdom.

Starting in 2017, every child in the UK will remain in the classroom for an extra 60 minutes, using the time for extra lessons, sports or art classes.

Hundreds of millions of pounds will be made available to fund the reforms and head teachers will be invited to bid for money to fund new ‘high quality’ programmes and extra-curricular activities in their schools.

Experts believe the changes will be good for children, helping to improve standards of learning, while also offering the opportunity to learn something new instead of being left to their own devices after the final bell.
