Once you have kids, it’s easy to convince that all manner of grown-up fun must be sacrificed in the interest of keeping little minds entertained.
With a little imagination however, it is, in fact, possible to plan a weekend that’s equally enjoyable for every member of the family, young and not-so-young.
Here are ten brilliant ways to ensure everybody’s smiling in those staycation snaps:
1. Revisit your childhood: Where is the place you were happiest as a child? Was it splashing in the icy shallows on a west Cork beach? Scoffing fish and chips on the harbour wall in Donegal? Chances are, your own kids will enjoy those places just as much as you did.
2. Burn some calories: Why not give the gym a skip and plan a weekend packed with activities that are guaranteed to get everybody’s heart racing? Kids love zip-lining and trampolining, but it’s even more fun if mum and dad join in.
3. Put the focus on food: Whether it’s a picnic in the nearest forest or a day-long adventure to seek out the best ice cream cone, food is a fun theme for an excursion.
4. Invite the cousins: Heading off for the weekend? More people equals more fun and it can also help you reduce accommodation costs as it makes sense to share a house or cottage. At night, the kids can tell ghost stories while the grown-ups kick back together.
5. Make a selfie album: Dig out the map and pinpoint six epic locations for a great family selfie, then hit the road and collect those memories, stopping for lunch on the way. This one is extra fun if the weather is terrible – howling winds and driving rain make for hilarious photos.
6. Experience something new: Have you always wanted to experience the races? Get the family involved, put on your glad rags and make a weekend of it! Explaining racing to kids will get them interested beforehand. Choose a venue like the Curragh (where kids under 16 are free accompanied by an adult) and they’ll also enjoy the circus-themed Moyglare Stud Kids Zone, located close to the parade ring, with the chance to ride the racehorse simulator, an arts and crafts work shop, giant outdoor games and the chance to meet some Shetland ponies!
7. Delve into history: Exploring a new part of Ireland is not just educational, it’s also fun. Research your destination ahead of time and entertain the kids with a bit of background (the more colourful the better) to pass the car journey.
8. Surprise yourself: It’s easy to fall into a rut as you get older. Show the kids your wild side by diving into the sea (sans wetsuit) in October, or having a go on that skateboard (helmet and knee pads advised). As the saying goes, the fun begins at the end of your comfort zone!
Longines Irish Champions Weekend takes place on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th September at both Leopardstown the Curragh. Check out the full programme of family events and save money by booking your tickets in advance here.
